I love trying out new recipes and this Indian Keema Aloo is one of my favorite weeknight dinners. I first came across this dish when I was searching for something a little different than the usual beef and potatoes recipe.

The mix of 1 lb ground beef with tender, cubed potatoes, finely chopped onion, and minced garlic and ginger creates a hearty base that really makes the flavors pop. When you add in a couple of green chilies and diced tomatoes, you’re in for a spicy kick like none other.

I also mix in cumin seeds, a bit of turmeric, ground coriander, and chili powder to bring an authentic Indian food vibe to the table. Finishing touches of garam masala, salt, a splash of vegetable oil and water, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro makes the dish unforgettable.

This recipe reminds me a lot of classic Keema Aloo styles that pair ground beef and potatoes in an amazing curry.

Indian Keema Aloo Recipe Substitutions and Variations

  • Instead of ground beef, you can use ground lamb or even ground turkey if you want a leaner version.
  • If you cant find regular potatoes, try using sweet potatoes for a slightly sweeter flavor.
  • Don’t have garam masala? You could mix a pinch of cinnamon, cloves and cardamom as a substitute.
  • For ground coriander, you can crush some coriander seeds to use in its place if needed.
  • If you’re out of beef broth, chicken broth works just as well in this recipe.

Pro Tips

1. When you’re heating the oil, make sure you let the cumin seeds sizzle long enough so they really get aromatic. This little extra step makes a big diff in boosting the overall flavor.
2. It helps alot to prep all your veggies and spices up front so you can keep the heat consistent. That way you wont overcook your onions or miss the point when adding garlic and ginger.
3. If you notice the sauce is getting too thick, add a bit more water or broth. Simmering uncovered for the last few minutes helps the sauce to thicken just right.
4. For a bonus flavor kick, try adding a squeeze of lemon juice or a bit more fresh cilantro right before serving. This adds a bit of tang and fresh vibe to the dish that makes it extra tasty.
